Surviving an IRS Audit

We all dread the thought of having the IRSTravel around the world tell us it wants to review a previous year's tax return. If you get audited, your best bet is to seek out a qualified tax professional. But if you're a do-it-yourselfLife is beautiful type of person, here are a few tips you can use to help you survive the audit process.Don't ignore the notice. You generally have 30 days to respond to an audit notice. If youSun shine in the rain don't respond, the IRS can take action, such as automatically adjusting your tax liability, and the next correspondence you'll receive is a bill Love is still the same
Read and follow the notice. The audit notice will give you specific information as to what items are being examined. Knowing what'sRomantic Lyrics being scrutinized will help you determine what you need to bring to the audit, so you can substantiate the items in question.
Organize your records. Making the auditor's job easier will win you some points. The auditor will at least believe that you're an organized person and that all of your items are documented and justified. Don't be afraid to group the items in question, or attach an adding-machine tape that matches the tax return. That will allow the auditor to quickly review the important issues. Don't believe those who tell you that you can just throw your records in a bag, drop it on the auditor's desk, and shout, "You figure it out!" That just doesn't work. Remember, it's your legal responsibility to prove your deductions.Replace missing records. If you're going through your records and find that some of them are missing, call for duplicates immediately. Don't just go to the audit and claim that the records are missing or lost. That does you no good at all. At best, the auditor will request that you obtain the records. At worst, the deduction in question will be denied, since there are no supporting documents.
Bring only what you're asked for. Leave at home any additional records and items not requested in the original audit notice. That way, if the auditor is curious about something else on the tax return, but the item was not on the original audit notice, you can politely tell him or her that those records are at home. It's likely that the issue will be dropped right there.
Don't be a jerk! Contrary to popular opinion, all of the employees at the IRS are people, too. They have wives, husbands, and kids, and they're employed at the IRS because they're working in their chosen profession. And make no mistake -- they are trained professionals. Taking out your frustrations on an auditor will get you nowhere. Insulting the auditor verbally will not solve any problems. And assaulting one physically is a federal offense. Remember, these people are just trying to do their jobs. Be courteous, even if the auditor is not courteous to you or seems

Be aware that appeals officers are even we were dear to each othermore senior than agents, with much more experience and knowledge behind them. If you're making a specious argument that the tax law doesn't support, thepeace in my heart appeals officer will quickly shoot it down. However, if the issue is complicated and your argument is founded in tax law and court cases, the appeals officer can make quick work of the analysis -- and might just find in your favor.
Again, your best bet if you're audited is to you miss the sunretain the services of a qualified and experienced tax pro who can argue your case without passion or prejudice. Such a person already knows the most effective ways to helpputs off its mask of vastness you quickly resolve a conflict with the IRS. Hiring such a person is not cheap, but quality services never are, and you could pay a lot more if you don't hire akiss of the eternal professional and the audit doesn't go well. The tax code has become so complicated that you're unlikely to know the law as it applies to your tax return and your rights as a taxpayer. That's why a qualified tax pro can be worth every dollar of his or her fee.But again, for those of you who decide to go the do-it-yourself route, stick to the game plan we've discussed here. And if you ever decide to remove your own appendix, well, good luck with that, too.

American Idol's Top 5 ninth-season finalists take the stage, perform

This week's mentor was Harry Connick, Jr., who helped the finalists interpret Frank Sinatra songs. However unlike previous mentors, Connick was also responsible for composing the arrangements of the songs the finalists sang and accompanied them on-stage with his big-band orchestra as they performed.
"I expressed interest in writing the arrangements and orchestrations for the contestants because I thought it would really be cool to have something in connection with these guys," he explained. "What I'm trying to do is feature the contestants by writing a supportive arrangement."
"American Idol is keeping me pretty busy right now to be honest with you. I mean I should be out laying by the pool -- you think Shania Twain was up in here doing this?" he joked, referencing last week's Idol mentor.
"I'll be playing for them. That's what I'm really excited about, is to play behind the contestants."
The following is Reality TV World's recap of the performance broadcast in the order which the Top 5 finalists sang. Also included are comments from each of the four judges -- Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and Simon Cowell -- as well as any noteworthy additional information about each finalist's performance or comments to Idol host Ryan Seacrest.
On Wednesday night, one finalist will be eliminated based on home viewer votes cast immediately following last night's broadcast, resulting in the season's Top 4 finalists.
Aaron Kelly, a 16-year-old from Sonestown, PASong: "Fly Me To The Moon"
Randy said: "One of the things I was looking for tonight -- I know my co-judges are looking for this too -- is who is in this to win it. It's getting down to the wire, who's got the fire, who's going to bring it hard. Sinatra Week -- I mean [it's] one of the best singers in the world, ever, [and] you got the great Harry Connick. I got to tell you dude, I was so worried more probably about you, because you're so young, [but] dude, you did a really good job. Nice work Aaron."
Ellen said: "I know, I know. I thought the piano kind of was a little pitchy. I was worried also for you and I can not believe -- I did not hear any country in that at all, I felt like you really pulled that off. That was beautiful vocals. Beautiful."
Kara said: "Aaron, I thought it was good. I did. I think compared to last week though, it wasn't as strong. And last week you really came into your own. I think you'll be here again, and what I want to say to you is what I want you to learn a little bit more is a little bit more charisma. Fill up the stage more. You know Frank Sinatra was just about as tall as you but he filled everything up, and he commanded it. And you still need to get there, you still need to break out as a performer because you're so close. This isn't a negative, this is constructive criticism, okay honey?"
Simon said: "I'm more with Kara on this one because... I adore Frank because Frank was the king of cool. He had a swagger, he had a believability. And if he was a lion, you were just a mouse. It didn't have the conviction for me and I thought the vocals toward the end were a bit corny. But the one thing about you, which is a good thing, is that people like you after you perform. Because you do try hard and I'm going to give you that."And forever has no end

Don Graham: We’re Open to Any Good Buyer

The Washington Post Company announced Wednesday that it was putting NEWSWEEK, which it has owned since 1961, up for sale. NEWSWEEK's Daniel Gross spoke with chairman Donald E. Graham about the decision. Excerpts:
SUBSCRIBE Click Here to subscribe to NEWSWEEK and save up to 88% >>
Gross: What did you announce today?
Graham: We announced that The Washington Post Company is prepared to sell NEWSWEEK and will listen to offers to buy the magazine.
Is there a deadline? No. We expect to listen to what people call expressions of interest for about a month, and then send a complete package of information. And then because it's good for the business we'll try to find a good buyer in the shortest possible period of time. We don't know how long that will take.
Why now? It seems like in the past year there's been a general bounce back in the economy at large, in the media, and in advertising.Good question. Three years ago we came to the board of directors with a three-year plan that involved a redesign of NEWSWEEK, a cutting of the rate base from 2.6 million circulation to 1.5 million, and to charge readers more for the magazine, which would in turn change the demographics and make us a better advertising buy. We looked at things at the beginning of this year. The circulation part of the strategy worked very well. We have the number of readers we want paying the circulation we wanted. Now, from an advertising point of view, 2009 was disastrous. It threw us behind so badly that looking ahead we don't see a path for NEWSWEEK to sustained profitability as part of our company. There were times in the past where NEWSWEEK lost money for a year, but you always felt there was a path.
Has advertising been recovering at all?
Obviously 2010 has been better than 2009. But for all of that, we are like most media. We're ahead of 2009 but nowhere where we were before.
Is The Washington Post in a materially different position than NEWSWEEK?
Yes. The weekly newsmagazine has been a good business for many years, and NEWSWEEK has a brilliant sales staff. But a daily newspaper in a big city has always had a big advantage. The Post, and every newspaper, gets an enormous amount of advertising from stores and car dealers and help wanted and real estate. I think a newspaper just has more sources of advertising revenue.
Is this a verdict on the genre of newsweeklies?I don't know. We know from years of market research that they are very popular with their readers. It's a complicated world out there, and a newsweekly helps them make sense of it. Where we have not succeeded is in this transition to digital. The overwhelming share of NEWSWEEK's revenue comes from the magazine, while the editorial staff is probably putting half its time into digital products. I'm disappointed in myself that, starting 15 years ago, I didn't figure out a way for NEWSWEEK to adapt faster to the environment.
Do you have a preferred buyer?
No. We're open to anybody who is interested. The start of our company in the 1930s was Eugene Meyer having ideas about something he would create. And I don't think anybody had heard of him at the time. We're open to the possibility that the buyer might be someone I haven't heard of.Don't cry, smile

Research on the Radio Coverage Planning of GSM-R in High-speed Railway Environment

Three types of widely used radio redundancy coverage schemes are thoroughly inspected in terms of system reliability, disaster recovery, frequency utilization efficiency,anti-interference ability and the impact on handover. This comparison provides a theoretical basis for engineering design in the choice of a redundancy scheme.Path loss modeling for several typical environments is done using Hata model in high-speed scenario.Cell coverage radiuses are calculated with different base station antenna height satisfying train control needs. On this basis, the formula for calculating the length of overlap zone is derived, which provides a way to research the impact of train speed, length of handover zone, handover margin and handover time on the overlap zone.Lengths of overlap designed for different maximum speeds are compared with results derived from C/I requirement, proves the former is better in C/I ratio. Finally, the distance between the base stations is planned and compared with the required minimum distance imposed by the error free period(Qos parameter),which leads to the conclusion that small and medium-sized city is not a suitable environment for high-speed trains.

The origin of Refrigerators

By the mid-nineteenth century, the term “icebox” had entered the American language, but ice was still only beginning to affect the diet of ordinary citizens in the United States. The ice trade grew with the growth of cities. Ice was used in hotels, taverns, and hospitals, and by some forward-looking city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish, and butter. After the Civil War( 1861-1865),as ice was used to refrigerate freight cars, it also came into household use.

Even before 1880,half of the ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that sold in Boston and Chicago, went to families for their own use. This had become possible because a new household convenience, the icebox, a precursor of the modern refrigerator, had been invented.

Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as we might now suppose. In the early nineteenth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notion that the best icebox was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for it was the melting of the ice that performed the cooling. Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping up the ice in blankets, which kept the ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineteenth century did inventors achieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox.

But as early as 1803, and ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had been on the right track. He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the city of Washington, for which the village of Georgetown was the market center. When he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, he found that customers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his competitors to pay a premium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks. One advantage of his icebox, Moore explained, was that farmers would no longer have to travel to market at night in order to keep their produce cool.
